چکیده

We prove three complexity results on vertex coloring problems restricted to Pk-free graphs, i.e., graphs that do not contain a path on k vertices as an induced subgraph. First of all, we show that the pre-coloring extension version of 5-coloring remains NP-complete when restricted to P6-free graphs. Recent results of Hoàng et al. imply that this problem is polynomially solvable on P5-free graphs. Secondly, we show that the pre-coloring extension version of 3-coloring is polynomially solvable for P6-free graphs. This implies a simpler algorithm for checking the 3-colorability of P6-free graphs than the algorithm given by Randerath and Schiermeyer. Finally, we prove that 6coloring is NP-complete for P7-free graphs. This problem was known to be polynomially solvable for P5-free graphs and NP-complete for P8-free graphs, so there remains one open case.

Improved Complexity Results on k-Coloring P t -Free Graphs

A graph is H-free if it does not contain an induced subgraph isomorphic to H . We denote by Pk and Ck the path and the cycle on k vertices, respectively. In this paper, we prove that 4-COLORING is NP-complete for P7-free graphs, and that 5-COLORING is NP-complete for P6-free graphs. These two results improve all previous results on kcoloring Pt-free graphs, and almost complete the classificatio...

Three Colors Suffice: Conflict-Free Coloring of Planar Graphs

A conflict-free k-coloring of a graph assigns one of k different colors to some of the vertices such that, for every vertex v, there is a color that is assigned to exactly one vertex among v and v’s neighbors. Such colorings have applications in wireless networking, robotics, and geometry, and are well-studied in graph theory. Here we study the natural problem of the conflict-free chromatic num...

Complexity of Coloring Graphs without Paths and Cycles

Let Pt and C` denote a path on t vertices and a cycle on ` vertices, respectively. In this paper we study the k-coloring problem for (Pt, C`)-free graphs. Maffray and Morel, and Bruce, Hoang and Sawada, have proved that 3-colorability of P5-free graphs has a finite forbidden induced subgraphs characterization, while Hoang, Moore, Recoskie, Sawada, and Vatshelle have shown that k-colorability of...

Star and Biclique Coloring and Choosability

A biclique of a graph G is an induced complete bipartite graph. A star of G is a biclique contained in the closed neighborhood of a vertex. A star (biclique) k-coloring of G is a k-coloring of G that contains no monochromatic maximal stars (bicliques). Similarly, for a list assignment L of G, a star (biclique) L-coloring is an L-coloring of G in which no maximal star (biclique) is monochromatic...
